Poll: Medicare for all support surges in 2026

Written by Diane Archer

The latest Axios-Ipsos poll indicates that twice as many Americans are in favor of “Medicare for All” as opposed to it. Two out of three people, including half of Republicans, want our government to spend taxes to reduce people’s health care costs, reports Margaret Talev for Axios.

This poll is a strong sign that most Americans recognize the limitations of corporate health insurance and see the value of government stepping in to provide health care coverage. Even though Americans have little faith in government, it appears they recognize that they need the government to provide them affordable health care.

Of note, as much as poll respondents want the government to cover their health care, they do not trust their government leaders. They have just 20 percent confidence in President Trump, and 25 percent confidence in Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for health-related information. Their confidence in Congress is also extremely low,  Congressional Republicans (20%) and Democrats (25%) also were at lows.

More than four in ten Americans polled (43 percent) favor government-run health insurance through “Medicare for All.” For the most part, Medicare for All would take over the role of  private health insurance. Just 24 percent of Americans are against the idea and nearly one-third (32 percent) don’t know what they think yet.

A majority of Democrats favor Medicare for All, as do almost half of independents (47 percent). Just over one in five Republicans (21 percent) favor Medicare for All and more than half (52 percent) are against it.

Opponents most worry about quality of care, taxpayer costs, and big government. But, more policymakers are recognizing that corporate health insurers are failing Americans, both in terms of costs and access to care. And, more Americans are recognizing that government subsidies and tax credits, along with prescription drug discount programs, will never deliver the cost-savings that people need.

What’s clear is that Americans want our federal government to make health care more affordable through federal programs.
