Fun ways to find happiness

Written by Diane Archer

As I see it, happiness and optimism go hand in hand. And, optimism is one key to a long life, according to many experts. So, I wanted to share some innovative thoughts from a recent article in The New York Times on how to be happy.

  1. Do something out of the ordinary on a regular basis. Here are some whacky ideas that could bring you joy: Change the side of the bed you sleep on to get a different perspective on your room or your partner! Break into a jog in the middle of a walk for an energy kick. Eat a little bit of chocolate for breakfast for pleasure.
  2. Spend time with people a bunch younger than yourself. This advice can be easier said than done. But, you can always find young people in the park or the playground. Or, perhaps you could volunteer at a kids’ day care program. Or, invite a young relative to lunch. Ask tons of questions. Listen. Avoid talking about your trips to the doctor!
  3. Gossip about fun and good things. Talk about the positive things you know about people and places. Don’t sweat the small stuff or waste time with the less good stuff.
  4. Continue your vacation rituals at home. Read a book in the middle of the day. Enjoy meals with friends and family. Explore a community near you that you aren’t familiar with. You’ll likely see and admire things you never knew were so close by.
  5. Embrace your daily activities as gifts. Be grateful that you can make a grilled cheese sandwich for your lunch guests or can take a walk in the park.
  6. Keep a collection of letters, emails and music that put a smile on your face. Spend time with them when you’re looking for a pickmeup.
  7. Be grateful for what’s around you. Enjoy the rain, the wind, the cold. See the glass as half full.
  8. Recognize what really matters. If it’s something you are going to forget about over the long-term, it doesn’t really matter.
