Help your loved ones understand your health needs and desires

Written by Diane Archer

As we age, we inevitably develop health conditions. But, we don’t always talk about them or make our wishes known about how we want to address them. Your loved ones should not have to guess what they are or debate them amongst themselves.

While you might not want to have the conversation, not having it can be especially hard on your loved ones. Plan ahead. Pick a time when a loved one is visiting and go for it!

Otherwise, will your loved ones know what to do if you’re hit by a car? Can someone close to you describe your health conditions to the treating physician in an emergency? Will the hospital know who to call?

When you have the conversation: Talk about what worries you most about your health. Where could you use some help? Keep and share a list of the prescription drugs, over the counter drugs and supplements you take. Include the names and numbers of the doctors who prescribed them, as well as the pharmacy you use. Be sure to update the list. Also, make clear your wishes as to where you’d like to live as you age and who will take care of you if you can’t take care of yourself. .

Make sure to sign a living will and health care proxy: These are documents you can download for free online to help your loved ones in an emergency. You can make your health care wishes known in writing, if you are unable to communicate them in a time of need. Be clear as to who you want to be in charge of your health care.

Ensure you can navigate your home safely. You don’t want to trip on a rug or fall in the shower. Tacking rugs down and installing handrails in the bathroom are easy fixes.
