Although President Trump pledged to bring down drug prices in the US to a level no higher than other wealthy countries, about one third of drugs on TrumpRx cost more than in the United Kingdom. Bhanvi Satija and Michael Erman report for Reuters on the prices for the 54 drugs on TrumpRx and how they compare with prices in other wealthy countries.
To be clear, if you have prescription drug coverage, TrumpRx is not likely to save you a penny. TrumpRx prices are only available to people paying out of pocket for their drugs. To bring drug prices down for everyone, the administration would need to require insurers to cover drugs their enrollees purchased through TrumpRx.
Eight pharmaceutical companies currently offer some drugs through TrumpRx. Reuters reports that Americans will see the biggest savings on weight-loss drugs, including Zepbound and Wegovy. Those drugs cost between $149 and $350 a month on TrumpRx. Their original list price was $1,000 a month.
People needing fertility drugs will also see deep discounts on TrumpRx. According to the manufacturer of three fertility drugs, used in combination, TrumpRx offers people an 84 percent discount off the list price.
A couple of brand-name drugs, one a steroid, Medrol, and one a cholesterol drug, Lopid, which have generic alternatives, also cost less on TrumpRx than they do abroad.
Experts interviewed for the Reuters story report that the drugs on TrumpRx with lower prices than abroad tend to be the ones with generic alternatives or older drugs that are about to lose their patents.
